Improved thickness measurement on rough surfaces by using guided wave cut-off frequency

نویسندگان

چکیده

Substantial variability is seen when thickness measurements using conventional ultrasonic time of flight are carried out on rough surfaces; this makes it difficult to estimate corrosion rates the mechanism leads surface roughness. It has been shown that guided wave cut-off frequencies (through resonance frequencies) can be done at much lower than gauging for same minimum resolution. The frequency less susceptible variations caused by roughness and so will give more consistent reliable results in cases where increased Measurements were four plates with different On a plate root mean square (rms) 0.3 mm, estimates followed trend predicted from geometry probe footprint, whereas higher reported literature deviated an rms 0.1 mm. cut-offcut-off transduction system as used large area monitoring possible combine small single unit. Optimal High Frequency Cut-off in SWAN Wave Model

This study investigates the importance of selecting an appropriate cut-off frequency in the SWAN model when it is applied to areas with limited fetches. In SWAN, the cut-off frequency is a constant value set by user in the model, and its appropriate selection plays an important role in the accuracy and optimization of the wave model; very high value increases the computational cost and might le...

A Peak Frequency Shift Method for Guided Wave Thickness Measurement and Its Realization by Different Transducer Techniques

Ultrasonic guided wave inspection is much more efficient than traditional point-bypoint examination. Guided waves can propagate over long distances from a single position, and therefore is a good method of evaluating thickness degradation, especially for large-area structures such as pipes and vessels. In this paper, guided wave thickness measurement potential is studied utilizing a peak freque...

Using a Breakpoint to Determine the Optimal Cut-off Frequency

The aims of this study were to compare methods of determining the optimal cut-off frequency (CFopt) for a Butterworth filter. CFopt were determined for leg displacement data for treadmill running through residual analysis using regression (RA0reg), integral of the power spectral density (PSD), and both these methods analysed through a new ‘breakpoint’ method. RA0reg did not correlate with other...

Influence of the Lift-Off Effect on the Cut-Off Frequency of the EMAT-Generated Rayleigh Wave Signal

The electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT), a non-contact NDT tool with large lift-off, is becoming an attractive method for detecting the cracks in the metal parts. However, the lift-off of the transducer has a direct effect on the feature that is used to characterize the defects. A detailed investigation on the relationship between the feature and the lift-off of the EMAT is crucial in th...

On wave equations and cut-off frequencies of plane atmospheres

This paper deals with the one-dimensional vertical propagation of linear adiabatic waves in plane atmospheres. In the literature there are various representations of the standard form of the wave equation from which different forms of the so called cut-off frequency are inferred. It is not uncommon that statements concerning the propagation behavior of waves are made which are based on the heig...
